Creative Team-Building Activities for Employees

A good employee team-building activity is one that is easy to engage in and beginner-friendly. We don’t want it to feel like a competition, but rather a relaxing and fun environment where team members can come together, create, and bond.

This is one of the reasons I created Sim.err’s Art Bar. Creative team building doesn’t have to be about who can paint the best piece. It can simply give people a reason to sit together, make something, talk, and experience their coworkers outside of their everyday roles.

The Benefits of a Creative Team-Building Activity

Sometimes, within a corporate environment, things can become monotonous and feel heavy. Taking time away from our regular tasks to do something creative can give employees an opportunity to reset, connect with one another, and use a different part of their brain.

As frivolous as creative activities may sometimes sound, I think they’re just as important to incorporate into employee wellness and engagement plans. Not every workplace activity has to focus on productivity. Sometimes, giving your team an opportunity to relax, create, and spend time together can be valuable on its own.

Creative Team-Building Activities for Employees

Custom T-Shirt Building

A friend recently showed me this really amazing activation event she attended as part of a concert. At this pop-up event, fans were given a choice of T-shirts and a variety of iron-on cutouts. They were able to design their own shirts and then have someone heat press their custom design onto the shirt.

I thought it was such a great idea and something that could easily be adapted into an employee team-building activity. If you’re planning the event yourself, you can purchase the materials and put together your own T-shirt station.

Some of the supplies you could use include:

  • Cotton T-shirts from stores like Michaels or Amazon

  • Printable iron-on sheets or pre-made iron-on designs

  • An iron or heat press

You could even customize the designs around your company, event theme, inside jokes, or give employees complete creative freedom.

Creating a Mural Painting Together

This is one of my favourites. I actually ran a workshop where we created a joint mural together.

There are a couple of ways you can approach this. You could pre-draw a larger piece and divide the design between separate canvases, with each person responsible for painting one section. Once everyone is finished, you put the canvases together to reveal the full artwork.

Another option is to come up with a theme as a group, have everyone create their own piece based on that theme, and then put everything together to create one larger mural.

I also like to include a little show-and-tell at the end so everyone has an opportunity to share what they created and the inspiration behind it.

The finished mural can even be displayed in the office as something the team created together.

Paint Your Own Coasters

I might be the only one, but I am obsessed with coasters.

When working in an office, I think coasters are not only a great gift but also a really fun painting activity. Everyone gets to create something they can actually use afterward, whether they keep it at their desk or take it home.

You can either organize a paint-by-numbers-style painting session or let everyone freehand their own design.

If you're creating the activity yourself, one easy way to protect the finished artwork is by using a sheet of clear adhesive laminate.

Seasonal and Cultural Creative Activities

Sometimes, as part of your portfolio, you may be responsible for DEI or cultural initiatives in the workplace. As part of this, you may be organizing events around different cultural celebrations and festivals.

I love the idea of incorporating seasonal and cultural creative activities because it allows people to be creative while also giving everyone an opportunity to learn about a celebration, tradition, or culture.

For example, you could:

  • Decorate paper lanterns for Lunar New Year

  • Paint diyas for Diwali

  • Paint ornaments for Christmas

These are just a few examples you can work from. Depending on the celebration, there are so many different creative activities you can incorporate into your workplace events.

When planning cultural activities, I also think it's important to understand the meaning behind what you're creating rather than treating it as just another craft. This gives you an opportunity to combine creativity with learning and appreciation.
